At its May 7, 2019, meeting, the City Council directed staff to advance the creation of a local minimum wage ordinance targeted for an effective date of January 1, 2020.
In order to meet the January 1, 2020, effective date, the local minimum wage ordinance must be adopted no later than September 24, 2019. With adoption on September 24, staff will have three months to prepare the required notices to employers and conduct information sessions necessary to educate employers and employees about the new ordinance.
Key elements of the ordinance
Minimum wage – Section 5.76.030 of the draft LMWO requires that all employers in Menlo Park pay a minimum of $15.00 per hour to employees working more than 2 hours per week beginning January 1, 2020 and may adjust annually in January thereafter. The Council directed early implementation for city-paid employees, beginning no later than July 1, 2019.
Annual adjustments – As drafted, the LMWO provides the City Council with the authority to set the minimum wage annually with an affirmative vote of the City Council in July of each year for effect the upcoming January 1. If the City Council takes no action, the minimum wage remains unchanged. The draft LMWO also includes provisions for the City Council to revert to the State of California minimum wage in the event of an economic downturn.
Applicability – Section 5.76.040 and 5.76.050 of the LMWO, as drafted, applies to all employers in Menlo Park, excluding federal, state, county and school district employers, with no provision for a phased implementation based on the number of employees.
Local businesses and organizations are encouraged to submit their events to the Chamber’s community calendar. Please adhere to the following guidelines for all event submissions:
– Preference will be given to those events taking place in the cities of Menlo Park, Atherton, Woodside, and Portola Valley. Large scale events of influence outside the city of Menlo Park will be considered for inclusion on an individual basis.
– The Menlo Park Chamber of Commerce reserves the right to publish events at their discretion.
